Halloween in Millcreek: What to Expect on the 31st

This is the event for the youngest kids. Families walk a marked, lit path rather than a street, which makes it the right first Halloween for a two-year-old who is not going to last until dark on the 31st. IVGID posts registration details in the fall, and the event is run for residents, so check the event page before you count on a spot.

Parking is the part people get wrong. In past years, the Aspen Grove lot has been held for ADA parking only and Incline Way has been restricted to foot traffic during the event window, with drivers directed to the Recreation Center, the Tennis Center, the Parasol Building, and Incline Middle School instead. Plan on parking a walk away rather than circling Lakeshore with a car full of costumed kids.

If you are handing out candy in Millcreek

A few things worth knowing before the 31st.

•      Buy more than you think. You are not supplying your street. You are supplying the neighborhood that everyone else's kids come to, and a Saturday Halloween will stretch the supply further than usual.

•      Move your car off the street early. Millcreek's streets handle normal weekday traffic fine, then absorb a few hours of concentrated foot and stroller traffic. Shuffling cars at 5:45 PM, when the sidewalks are already full, is how you end up blocked in.

•      A table at the end of the driveway beats the porch. It keeps the line moving, it keeps strollers off the walkway, and it means you are not answering the door every ninety seconds for three hours.

•      Light the path. The lots are level but the walkways are dark, and the youngest trick-or-treaters are the ones most likely to trip on a step they did not see.

Living here the other 364 days

Halloween is the loudest night of the year in Millcreek, and it is a fair introduction to the neighborhood's character, but it is not the whole picture. The area runs to a mix of 1970s homes being redeveloped and newly built custom houses, with level lots that are among the easiest to build on in Incline Village. Incline and Ski Beaches, the Hyatt, and Country Club Plaza are all close, and the Tunnel Creek and East Shore trailheads are a short drive. It is a neighborhood people live in year-round rather than visit, which is exactly what makes the 31st work.
