The Saturday Ski Beach Changes Hands

Starting this month, a dog with an owner who has beach access can be on exactly one stretch of IVGID sand in Incline Village. That stretch is the part of Ski Beach west of the boat ramp. The window opens after the beaches close for the season, typically October 15, and it lasts through April 15. Two days after the window opens, on Saturday, October 17, IVGID Parks & Recreation holds its annual Puppy Plunge at Ski Beach. At noon the same day, the second annual Fall Fest starts at Village Center. For Central, that Saturday is when the shoreline and the shopping center both switch to their off-season roles.

The Rule Behind the Plunge

IVGID's off-season dog policy is one paragraph long, and every condition in it matters:

  • Where: Ski Beach only, west of the boat ramp.
  • When: after the beaches close for the season, "typically October 15 through April 15." IVGID doesn't post separate dates for each season. If the usual window holds this year, it runs from Thursday, October 15, 2026, to April 15, 2027.
  • Who: dogs must be with an owner who has beach access. Ski Beach is restricted to IVGID Picture Pass and Recreation Punch Card holders with beach access, plus their guests. Daily guest access requires the guest to be there with a Picture Pass holder.
  • Cleanup: IVGID notes that under Washoe County ordinance, dog owners are responsible for picking up after their dogs.

The beach rules also require a leash on the pavement when a dog is walked from the gate to a watercraft. The off-season paragraph itself sets no general leash length or off-leash condition for the sand. Anyone unsure about leash expectations on the beach can call Parks & Recreation at 775-832-1310.

The dates don't quite line up, and the gap is small. The written policy gives October 15 as the typical opening date for dog access. IVGID's event page describes the October 17 Puppy Plunge as a celebration of "the opening of off-season dog access to Ski Beach." IVGID doesn't explain the two-day difference. On this year's calendar, the typical start date is a Thursday and the celebration is on Saturday.

Why It's Still Ski Beach, Even With Incline Beach Torn Up

This year Incline Beach looks different. The Beach House project closed the usual entrance. The beach stayed open to passholders and guests through a temporary entrance on the west side, with less parking, and summer food service moved over to Ski Beach. IVGID's May update projected that the Beach House would be finished in mid-summer 2027, so the construction carries into next beach season. The Beach House is also on IVGID's September 30 list of capital projects under construction.

None of the construction notices mention a change to the dog policy. The current policy page, updated in September, still names Ski Beach west of the boat ramp and nowhere else. Ski Beach spent the summer taking on extra work while Incline Beach was under construction. In the off-season it keeps the one job it has always had.

Saturday, October 17, Hour by Hour

Both events fit into one afternoon:

  1. 11:30 a.m. Sign-ups open for the Puppy Plunge dock-diving competition at Ski Beach, 967 Lakeshore Blvd.
  2. Noon. The dock-diving competition starts. Fall Fest opens at Village Center at the same time.
  3. 1 p.m. The Puppy Plunge ends.
  4. 3 p.m. Fall Fest ends.

That leaves two hours of Fall Fest after the last dog leaves the dock.

At the dock

IVGID describes the Puppy Plunge as "exciting competitions and tasty treats," run in collaboration with Pet Network Humane Society. The contest entry is a jar of peanut butter. IVGID also thanks Pet Network Humane Society, The Pet Station, and the Tahoe-Incline Rotary for helping make the event happen each year. The 2026 listing doesn't give an admission fee or advance registration steps. Sign-up for dock diving happens on site.

The same Ski Beach access rules apply on event day, so the Plunge is for passholders, punch card holders with beach access, and their guests. IVGID asks attendees to park across Lakeshore at Aspen Grove or in the Overflow Lot. Last year's event fell on Saturday, October 18, 2025, the same mid-October Saturday slot.

At Village Center

Fall Fest is run by the Incline Village Crystal Bay Association, the community and business association known as IVCBA, which is organized as a 501(c)(6). It co-hosts the 2026 event with Tahoe's Connection for Families and the Village Center merchants. Admission is free, all ages are welcome, and this is the second year it has run.

IVCBA has announced these pieces:

  • A pumpkin patch from Grocery Outlet, plus pumpkin decorating.
  • A family carnival from Tahoe's Connection for Families.
  • Scarecrow building. Moonshine Ink's October brief names Sierra Verde as the host.
  • Live music, games, food, and drinks among the participating merchants.

IVCBA's Fall Fest page lists vendor offerings that are a little unusual for a pumpkin-patch afternoon. They include wine and beer tastings, margaritas, handmade soaps, candy, a clothing sale, toys and gifts, information booths, flu shots, and a mobile sauna and cold plunge. Two of those overlap with ordinary errands. A flu shot at a street festival is something you might otherwise book separately. The cold plunge is a small echo of the dogs going into the lake earlier that day.

The Fall Fest page has a Participating Businesses section, and most entries are listed by what the booth offers. IVCBA's September announcement said more details on participating merchants, entertainment, and food would follow. None of the 2026 descriptions mention trick-or-treating or a costume contest. Fall Fest is a harvest-season afternoon, and Halloween comes later in the month.

After 3 p.m.

Glasses Wine Bar, at 760 Mays Blvd., Suite 8, reopened in February under local owners Mike Walker and Jeff Peterson after a renovation. It expanded its wine and food offerings and announced Tuesday through Saturday hours of 3 to 9 p.m. If those hours still hold, its doors open on a Saturday right as Fall Fest wraps up. Those are the hours from February, so a quick call ahead makes sense.

The Rest of Central's Changeover Month

The beach rule is the clearest sign of the season turning in Central, and a few other things shift around the same time.

The Recreation Center is in the middle of an HVAC replacement. IVGID has warned of changed airflow, construction noise, limited access, some programs moving off site, and short closures. Its September 4 update moved the expected finish to mid-to-late October. If that holds, the Rec Center's winter season begins with the new system running.

Getting around changes too. TART's fall schedule, which runs through December 11, includes North Shore night service and TART Connect on-demand rides until 10 p.m. It also adds buses for popular fall events, and the TART Connect and Transit apps now offer real-time tracking. That's useful on a Saturday when Ski Beach parking is sent to Aspen Grove and the Overflow Lot.

Fall chores have deadlines this month as well. IVGID's curbside yard-waste collection runs through October 30. Starting this year, black plastic or heavy-duty paper bags up to 40 pounds are allowed. Bags left at the curb after October 30 may be charged as trash at $6.36. Clear the pine needles from the deck the weekend before, and the 17th can be spent at the dock and the pumpkin patch.

The sequence for the season is set. Under IVGID's typical window, dogs can use Ski Beach west of the boat ramp from October 15. The Plunge and Fall Fest share the afternoon of October 17. Dog access typically lasts until April 15. By then the Incline Beach House should be a few months from its projected mid-summer finish.

If you live in Central, or anywhere else in town, and want help with the parts of Incline Village life that don't appear on a listing sheet, like which beach your dog can use in January, the team at Inside Incline - Sabrina Belleci is glad to share what we know. We'll see you at the dock on the 17th.
